Marvelous Mealworms

Writer's picture: Gabriella OliveriGabriella Oliveri

Experiment 1:How does the number of mealworms in a petri dish effect their behavior?

Hypothesis: We think that the less mealworms in a dish, the more they will interact.

2 Mealworms

- staying far apart

- not interacting

- right when we put them together, they crawled apart.

- Opposite side of the Petri dish

3 Mealworms

- The three mealworms first stayed together

- they split apart

- always come back for each other

- repeated cycle

4 Mealworms

- stayed in a very small group

- they all crawled in the same direction

- Interacted together often

Conclusions:

Our initial thoughts were incorrect in that less mealworms would interact better. In fact, in our experiment, the mealworms interacted more with each other

Experiment 2: How will different temperatures effect the mealworm’s behavior?

Hypothesis: We think the mealworm will go to the warmth

Observations:

We placed five ice cubes, which were 36*F and we lite a tea candle, 80*F, on opposite sides of a box, 22cm x 12cm, and placed the mealworm in the middle. The mealworm was initial staying in the middle of the box and stayed there for 30 seconds before it started to move towards the ice. Around the five minuet mark, the mealworm had made it to ice and stopped moving around, like it was hibernating.

Conclusions:

Our hypothesis was incorrect. The mealworm gravitated towards the ice, instead of the candle like we expected. We think the mealworm went to the ice because they prefer cool temperatures.

Experiment 3: How long will it take a mealworm to navigate a maze?

Hypothesis:We think it will take approximately 5 minutes for the mealworm to complete the maze

Observations:

We set up a timer and put the mealworm in the maze, The mealworm only stayed in one spot. After 2 minutes the mealworm started to climb up the wall. After 8 minutes and 17 seconds the mealworm made it to the top of the wall.

Conclusions:

The mealworm can not process the maze, therefore, it is unable to navigate it.
